Shofars with the Tekiah Select™ Shofar branding are the few that have met Steve's high standards. They are all exceptional shofars and each one produces at least 5 melodic notes with a strong, clear and powerful sound.
In 2010 Steve Berkson launched Tekiah Select™ Shofars with the goal of equipping the Children of Israel with exceptional shofars. Steve is a classically trained trumpet player and has been blowing the Shofar for almost 40 years. He knows what a great Shofar sounds like. From a teenager through adulthood, Steve blew the Shofar in the Synagogue on the Holy Days and has trained many others to do the same in their Synagogues. In his experience the majority of the Shofars that are sold today are not very good. They are not melodic, sound weak, and barely produce 2 or 3 notes. When you purchase a Shofar from most suppliers, they simply grab one of the size you ordered and ship it off to you. They have no idea how good it is or what it sounds like, and neither do most shofar buyers. Steve personally goes to suppliers that import shofars from Israel and tests all of the Shofars in their inventory (usually around 80-100) and selects only the few that meet his high standards. He usually finds one great Shofar for every 20-30 that he tests. That means that you have about a 4% chance of getting a great Shofar when you buy from most suppliers (These are the same suppliers that supply most of the retail outlets/websites/stores here in the U.S.).
Shofars with the Tekiah Select™ Shofar branding are the few that have met Steve's high standards. They are all exceptional shofars and each one produces at least 5 melodic notes with a strong, clear and powerful sound. (To hit more than 3 notes may take practice and the strengthening of your lip).
When you purchase a Tekiah Select™ Shofar you are assured of getting a great Shofar!
